Bold Ideas, Bright Futures: Brilliance in Medical Affairs was the theme of this year’s joint Medical Affairs Professionals of Australasia (MAPA) and Medical Affairs Professional Society (MAPS) Australasia Medical Affairs Summit. The 2-day meeting was held on 24 and 25 September in Sydney, Australia, and welcomed over 300 attendees and 75 faculty members.

Alan Thomas is a patient advocate for rare diseases, and ataxia in particular. He is known as the ‘rare disease warrior’ and, as a patient with a life-limiting rare disease, he can convey the patient engagement message from his point of view on all issues regarding the wellbeing of patients.
After finishing my undergraduate degree in biomedical sciences, I was eager to harness the skills I had developed and transfer them to a new environment. This led me to apply for an internship at Oxford PharmaGenesis.
